BCL 1 - Four Easy Steps

Jazclass provides music notation :

  • in Concert Key (for keuboard, guitar, flute, recorder, harp, voice, etc.)
  • for Bb instruments (trumpet, clarinet, tenot sax, soprano sax)
  • for Eb instruments (alto sax, baritone sax)

You can also easily convert the Eb instruments scores into Bass Clef notation (for Bass, trombone, etc.).

This is done in four easy steps :

  1. Replace the Treble Clef on the staffs for Eb music by the Bass Clef.
All notes remain in the same positions.

  2. Change the key signature, by taking away 3 sharps or adding 3 flats.
    For example :
    • the key of E (4 sharps) becomes G (1 sharp)
    • the key of A (3 sharps) becomes C ( no sharps or flats)
    • the key of D (2 sharps) becomes F (1 flat)
    • the key of G (1 sharp) becomes Bb (2 flats)
      and so on.

  3. Check the accidentals in the score.
Most remain correct, but a natural that cancels a sharp of the original key signature may become a flat in the Bass Clef key.

  4. Convert the chord symbols above the staff.
All chord names become a minor third (3 semitones) higher.
    Use this Conversion Table :

4. Change the Chord symbols.
All new chord names are 3 semitones higher.

(You can check your converted chord symbols with those on the (Treble Clef) sheet music for C instruments. They should of course be the same.)

There we are, all done. Piece of cake !
