The regular Publisher of Ernest Hemingway's novels wrote a Foreword in one of the books. It related the following. In his younger years Hemingway lived with his wife in Paris. He earned money during that period writing reports and stories for the Toronto Northern Star Newspaper, a total of 88 articles. At one stage the publisher suggested to bundle some of these stories and publish them as one book. Hemingway became furious at this suggestion, for they were, as he explained, absolutely not suitable for such purpose. The Publisher, after some reflection, concluded that Hemingway judged these articles unsuitable because they did not have and "inside". Whether this outside/inside concept was the Publisher's idea or actually came from Hemingway himself is not clear from what I read. M.F.
