The Fauvist painters Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and his younger colleague André Derain spent much time in Collioure, just 25 km (15 miles) South of Perpignan on the French Côte Vermeille (Vermillion Coast) because of the high intense blue sky and great natural light there. |
