Sinterklaas arriving by boat in Meppel, Drenthe (about 40km SW of Assen), on December 5, greeted by numerous school children. We had a similar event during my Primary school days in Gorssel. Sinterklaas would arrive by steamboat on the river IJssel, and both our village schools would greet him there. Then in a long processions we would walk back to school, Sintklaas and his Zwarte Pieten (Black Peters) in front.
