Mendi is at the very end of the Higlands Highway in Papua New Guinea. It first runs from Lae on the North PNG coast about 100km through the Markham Valley, then up a 1000 metres climb of the treachurous Kassam Pass to the Highlands. The construction township of Yonki is 12 kms from the top. Then the village of Kainantu and the towns of Goroka and Mout Hagen before reaching Mendi (about 300 km from the coast). From 1972-74 I was the geotechnical consulant on the construction of the Ramu River Hydroelectric Scheme at Yonki. The children have collected their Easter eggs. babette is leaning on the car, Jeroen is standing next to me. We are traveling with Gerry and Fay Clarke and their children. Gerry was the Senior Supervising Electrical Engineer on the Yonki project. |
