Punts, V-shaped hulls and catamarans all move through the water by riding on top of it, or pushing water aside and partially lifting the hull. They can move fast, but are uncomfortable in choppy conditions. Displacement hulls, like this small cabin cruiser, move by pushing water out of the way, "displacing it". There are two main types : small displacement hulls (called "putt putts") and larger trawler-type boats. Displacement hull designs are limited in speed but are a comfortable ride and have good sea-keeping qualities. They also can carry greater loads. |
