R-BR 7.3 - Some General Principles
I. The Skip-over Principle
Bids by Opener shown in bold. What can the Opener deduct from Partner's response ?
- 1C - 1H ------------- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 1C - 1S -------------- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 1D - 1NT ----------- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 1C - 1D - 1S ------- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 1D - 1H - 1NT ----- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

II. Major suit Trump fits
Most . . . .card trump fits either consist of each player having . . . . cards in the trump suit (a . . . - . . . split), or of one player having . . . . . while the other has . . . . cards in the trump suit (a . . . - . . . split).
In a Bidding system using 5 card major Opening bids (as in this course) life is made very easy for the Responder.
- When Opener opens with 1H or with 1S - Responder knows there is a trump fit when he holds only . . . . cards in that suit.
- When Opener opens with a minor suit and bids 1H or 1S at his next turn - Responder knows he must have . . . . cards in the major suit for a trump fit.
For the Opener the choice is not that clear. Any new suit bid by the Responder promises only . . . . cards in that suit.
Opener can therefore only raise Responder's suit with . . . . card support. With only . . . . cards in that suit he should wait until Responder rebids his suit (showing now at least . . . . . . . . . . in the suit), or raise Responder's suit at his next turn (showing . . . . card support).

III. Balanced hand Openings
Here is the full range of Opening bids with a balanced hand.
- 13-15 pts = Open . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 16-18 pts = Open . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 19-21 pts = Open . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 22-14 pts = Open . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
- 25-27 pts = Open . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
With . . . . . . . . pts or . . . . . . . . pts you still can explore the possibility of a major suit trump fit by bidding your . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . before bidding . . . . . . .
In Example 13 you have a . . . . . . . . . . hand with . . . .points and open the bidding with . . . . . .
- If your Partner responds with 1S or 2C, or single raises your opening bid ---- you reply : . . . . . . . . .
- If your Partner responds with 1H ---- you reply : . . . . . . . . .

IV. Responses with 11-12 points
With . . . . . . . . pts you can not immediately respond . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . when you have trump support (or with a . . . . . . . bid when you are balanced).
In these cases always . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and raise Opener's suit on your next turn to bid.
In rare instances you may not have a 4 card suit to bid. In such case bid a . . . . . . . . . . suit at the 2 level. (Partner will be unlikely to raise that suit unless he has . . . . . . card support.)
For example with :
S - A 10 4 2
H - 9 5 4
C - K 6 3
D - A 9 8
- after an Opening of 1S : respond with . . . . . . . . .
- plan to raise Opener's Spades when . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

V. Responder's 10 points Barrier
As a Responder you can not bid a new suit at the . . . . level with . . . . . points or less.
You may raise Opener's suit at the . . . . level which shows . . . . . . . . pts, but otherwise the highest you may bid (after a 1 in a suit opening) is . . . . . . . .
For example with :
S - 9 2
H - 9 5 4 2
C - K 9 6
D - A 9 8 2
- After an Opening bid of 1H : respond with . . . . . . . .
- After an Opening bid of 1S : respond with . . . . . . . .
Example 14 is an extreme case where you hold . . . . . . . . . . . . . . hand with . . . . . points.
- If your Partner opens with : 1C or 1D ---- you reply : . . . . . . . . .
- If your Partner opens with 1H ---- you reply : . . . . . . . . . . .
- If your Partner opens with : 1S ---- you reply : . . . . . . . . . .
Such bid is called a . . . . . . . . . . . . . It promises at least . . . . . points with . . . . cards in the first suit bid and . . . . . cards in the second (a . . . - . . . . distribution is also possible).
For example :
