Lesson 3 : Examples 5 - 8
Suit raises to a 1 in a suit Opening bid

Ex. 5             Bidding : 1♠ - 2♠ - Pass
Opener
- A Q 7 4 3
- A 8
- 7 5 4
- K 8 6
  Responder
- 9 6 2
- K 7 3 2
- K Q 8
- 7 5 4

Responder's single raise shows 6-10 points. Opener, with only 14 points (13 HCP + 1 SP), realises Game with at the most 24 points is not on. Here therefore passes.

Ex. 6             Bidding : 1♥ - 2♥ - 3♥ - Pass
Opener
- 7 2
- A K 8 4 3
- A J 6 2
- K 9
  Responder
- 8 6 5
- J 7 5 2
- 4 3
- A 7 5 3

After Responder's single raise Opener can count 17 points (15 HCP + 2SP) in his hand. He therefore bids 3♥, inviting Responder to bid Game if he holds 9-10 (or even 8) points.
Responder, with only 6 points (5 HCP + 1 SP) correctly passes.

Ex. 7             Bidding : 1♠ - 2♠ - 3♠ - 4♠ - Pass
Opener
- K Q 8 4 3 2
- 7
- A K 4
- Q 8 3
  Responder
- J 10 5
- A 8 6 4
- Q 9 3 2
- J 2

After Responder's single raise Opener counts 17 points (14 HCP + 3SP) in his hand. He therefore bid 3♠, inviting Responder to bid Game with a maximum (8-10).
With 9½ points Responder obliges and bids 4♠.

Ex. 8             Bidding : 1♥ - 2♥ - 4♥ - Pass
Opener
- A K 9 5
- K Q 8 5 2
- A J 8
- 8
  Responder
- 10 7
- J 10 6 4
- K 6 2
- K 6 4 3

After Responder's single raise Opener can count 20 points (17 HCP + 3 SP) in his hands. Even if Responder holds only 6 points, the combined total (26) is enough for Game. Opener therefore bids 4♥.
