Lesson 4 : Examples 13 - 16
NT responses after a 1 in a suit Opening bid

Ex. 13             Bidding : 1♦ - 1NT - Pass
Opener
- A 10 9
- A Q 8
- Q J 4 3
- J 10 8
  Responder
- K 6 3
- 6 4
- 8 6 5
- K Q 5 4 2

Responder shows 6-10 points and denies having a 4-card major suit.
He has 5 clubs but can not bid a new suit at the 2-level with less than 10 points.   Opener, with 15 points only, must pass.

Ex. 14             Bidding : 1♥* - 1NT - 2NT - 3NT - Pass
Opener
- A 2
- K Q 9 8 4
- A J 6
- K 9 4
  Responder
- K 6 4
- 10 7
- Q 9 4 3
- A 7 5 3

Responder shows 6-10 points. The Opener, with 18 points, rebids 2NT, inviting Responder to bid to Game with a maximum (8-10) but Pass with a minimum (6-7). Responder bids 3NT accordingly.
* = with a balanced hand and a 5-card major, prefer to open with the major.

Ex. 15             Bidding : 1♦ - 2NT - 3NT - Pass
Opener
- A 2
- K J 3
- J 10 9 6 5 2
- A 4
  Responder
- K J 7
- A Q 2
- 8 4 3
- K 9 5 3

Responder, with 13 HCP and a balanced hand (without a 4-card major) bids 2NT. This is forcing to Game. Opener, with only a minimum opening hand, signs of in 3NT.

Ex. 16             Bidding : 1♠ - 1NT - 3NT - Pass
Opener
- A 10 9 7 4
- A K Q
- K 6 2
- K 8
  Responder
- 8 3
- 9 8 5
- Q J 10 7
- A J 9 5

With only two spades Responder can not raise Opener's suit. He must bid 1NT, showing 6 points at least (6-10). The Opener, with 20½ points, can therefore directly bid Game : 3NT.
