3. A mode and a scale are essentially the same, both fit into definition 1 above. The distinction is therefore more of Historical nature, reflecting a usage of 2000 years.
(The name "major scale" is only a few hundred years old. The original "Ionian mode" was not particularly favoured by composers and musicians in the past. Only its suitability for the development of Western harmonised music brought it to prominence and set it aside from the other modes.)
