Moving Players around

A Director is not only responsible for moving the boards around and solving problems during play as they occur.

The Director is equally responsible to move the players every round while maintaining a general sense of momentum and energy.

A bridge session should not deteriorate into a grannies tea party !
The more tables are waiting for the next round to start the less effective you are as a Director !

To maintain momentum always do the following :

  1. Your first responsibility is to do your Director's duty, even when you are playing yourself.
Sit South on Table 1 where you are the stationary pair. Let your partner (North) look after everything going on at your table. Do not get involved with that !
Continually look at or walk around the other tables and check progress.
Is one table a board behind ? Be prepared to give them an Average score on their last board and do this before they have started it.

  2. Start moving boards around for the next round as soon as the first 2 tables have finished playing their boards.
From tables still playing take their finished boards and move them to the next table. If necessary tell them they are running behind.

Don't grab a few boards here and there, but always move boards from all tables around in an anti-clockwise direction !

  3. Never wait for the last table to finish their boards !!!
Call the move for the next round when the last one or two tables have still 5 cards to play in the Dummy hand. You can easily spot this while walking around and wait for that moment !

  4. Above all : be decisive, you're in charge !

Following the above 4 point approach will ensure that you keep the momentum going, while you generate a sense of excitement and enthusiasm for all players !!
