Handling of Boards and accommodating late
Pairs
HANDLING of BOARDS
These are perhaps trivial points, but they help to reduce errors when moving
boards around the tables.
- Set tables out in a circular or rectangular pattern, then number
tables with increasing numbers in clockwise direction.
This establishes a routine in the club
where, with a Mitchell movement the EW Pairs move clockwise to a next
higher numbered table, while the boards move anti-clockwise to the next
lower numbered table.
- The Director places the new boards board number up on the table
prior to
start of play of the next round.
- After completing a deal North places the played board board number
down on the table.
- Deals are played in ascending order : 1 2 3, or 7 8 9 (not 3 1
2 or 8 9 7)
- The Director when moving the boards makes sure they are
stacked in ascending numbered order (for example Board 7 on top
underneath it first board 8 with board 9 at the bottom). This ensured the boards are played in the correct
order.
LATE PAIRS
The Director must chose the movement with the possibility of a late coming
pair in mind. Here follow the main considerations.
From 4 to 5
pairs (2 to 2½ tables)
With 2 tables, both tables share deals 1-5 the
first round. If you suspect there will be one or
two late-comers, start both tables off with one
deal only.
- Table 1 plays Deal 1, while Table 2 plays
Deal 5.
- If no new players arrive :
- add Deals 2 and 3 to Table 1
- and Deal 4 to Table 2, and continue the 2-table
Howell movement as normal.
- If new players do turn up set up
Table 3 and :
- add Deals 2 + 3 to Table 1
- add Deals 4 + 6 to Table 2
- place Deals 10-12 on Table 3 for a 3-table
Howell movement.
The late pair will be EW Pair 2 at Table 3 and sit
out the first round.
Distribute the appropriate Guide cards after
the first Deal has been completed.
