Did you bid 2♣ ?   I hope not !
To their credit nobody did when we played this deal.   However most bid 1NT, which is not quite as bad but not right either.

Count your Length Points !
Experts agree that a 5-card suit will on average produce at least 1 extra trick. Therefore the 1 LP for that extra card is well warranted.
This puts the strength of East's hand at 11½ points (the hand also has only 8 losers). Too strong for a 1NT or a 2♣ response.
So what should East bid instead ?
