Deal 53 - Dealer is North - All Vulnerable

Bidding : 2H (N) - 4H (S) - Pass (N)

Opening Lead : J of Spades (E) = top of a solid sequence

Declarer (N) counts 4 possible losers : two in Spades, one in Diamonds and one in Clubs.
There are finesse options in all three side suits, but a Club finesse, even if it fails will provide 2 or 3 extra winners on which Declarer's Diamond and Spade losers can be discarded.

Declarer Play
Selecting the most productive finesse option - Direct finesse by the Defence
Opponents win the first two tricks in Spades, the third one being ruffed by Declarer. Declarer then plays two rounds of Hearts, drawing all enemy trumps. At trick 6 Declarer leads the Jack of Clubs for a direct finesse against the King. East and Dummy play low and West's King wins the trick.
But West has nowhere else to go for his next trick and whater he leads Declarer will make all remaining tricks.

Score = 4 x 30 trick pts + 500 bonus pts = 620 pts total

Deal 54 - Dealer is East - None Vulnerable

Bidding : 2S (E) - 2NT (W) - 3S (E) - 4S (W)
After West's Ogust 2NT East shows "maximum points, good suit"

Opening Lead : Jack of Diamonds (S) = top of a solid sequence

Declarer (E) counts 4 possible losers : One in Spades, two in Hearts and one in Diamonds. He can not avoid losing to the Aces of Spade and Diamonds, but a double finesse of the Hearts has a 75% chance of reducing his losers to three only.

Declarer Play
Ogust Convention   -   Indirect double finesse
Declarer plays Dummy's Queen on the opening lead, which is captured by North's Ace. North returns a second Diamond, South plays the 10 and Dummy wins with the King.
At trick 3 Dummy leads a small Spade to Declarer's King, captured by South's Ace, who then leads his Diamond 9, which is ruffed by Declarer.
At trick 5 Declarer draws one more round of trumps with his Queen, then leads a small Heart to Dummy's 10. North wins with the King, but all remaining tricks are now won by Declarer and Dummy, making 10 tricks in total.

Score = 4 x 30 trick pts + 300 bonus pts = 420 pts total

Deal 55 - Dealer is South - NS Vulnerable

Bidding : Pass (S) - 2H (W) - 2NT (E) - 3S (W) - 4H (E)
After East's Ogust 2NT West shows "maximum points, good suit"

Opening Lead : 10 of Diamonds (N) = top of touching cards in an "internal sequence".

Declarer (W) counts 4 possible losers : one each in Spades and hearts and two in the Club suit.
There are finesse options in all these three suits, but the double finesse in Clubs is the most productive.

Declarer Play
Ogust Convention   -   Indirect double finesse
Dummy wins the opening lead with the Diamond Ace, then leads a small trump to Declarer's Heart Ace, hoping to find North with singleton trump King. Unfortunately this proves not the case. Declarer is quite happy to leave North holding his singleton trump King, and leads instead a small Club to Dummy's Jack. South wins with his King.

At trick 4 South leads another Diamond, which is ruffed by Declarer. At trick 5 Declarer leads a small Club, North plays again low and Dummy wins the trick with the 10. Dummy then leads a small Spade to Declarer's King, who at trick 7 leads his last small Club, North plays the Queen which is captured by Dummy's Ace. Dummy now leads his last remaining Club on which Declarer discards his last remaining small Spade. North may ruff, but the remaining tricks are all won by Declarer, 11 tricks in all.

Deal 56 - Dealer is West - EW Vulnerable

Bidding : 2S (W) - DBL (N) - 4S (E) - 5H (S) - Pass (W) - 6H (N)
East makes a good sacrifice bid of 4S, but Opponents are too strong, as well as aggressive. Most NS sides would probably not reached the Slam contract, which without interference of the Opponents would have been easy to bid.

Opening Lead : King of Spades (W) = top of a solid sequence

Declarer (S) counts only 1 possible loser : the King of Diamonds.
Declarer's second Spade can be ruffed in Dummy.

Declarer Play
Takeout Double   -   Sacrifice bidding   -   Direct finesse
Declarer wins the opening lead with the Spade Ace, then leads two rounds of trumps winning with his Queen and Jack. He then (trick 4) plays the Diamond Jack for a direct finesse against West's King. West plays low and the Jack wins the trick. Declarer then leads a small Diamond to Dummy's Queen which wins.At trick 6 Dummy leads the Diamond Ace which finally captures West's King. At trick 7 Dummy's last Diamond is overtaken by Declarer's 10, who then leads and wins his last remaining Diamond. At trick 9 Declarer leads his small Spade which is ruffed in Dummy. Declarer's remaining cards are now all winning trumps, making all 13 tricks.

Score = 7 x 30 trick pts + 800 bonus pts = 1010 pts total
