Martinshof, lounge facing East

The wonderful black and white blocked linoleum floor was put in by some of my tradesmen friends from the village. They did a great job. My parents had carried their similar original floor covering from Zutphen and installed it on Martinshof.
Towards the end of the war however this room was confiscated and occupied by officers, first by the Germans, then in due course by the Allied soldiers. Their boots caused of course plenty of wear and tear. For years we kept nailing the old pieces to the floor, especially every time before we held parties of my student friends in here, but eventually we had this new one installed. It was still in prime condition when we sold the house.
My Dutch grandfather traveled a few times to Turkey for business. Here he purchased a wealth of furniture, carpets, curtains and all sorts of curiosa. They ended up with a whole Turkish lounge room at their home. Some of these items eventually ended up in Martinshof, like the large antique wardrobe on the right and the vases on top of it. Also a Turkish water pipe, which my mother converted into a lamp, standing on the small rectangular table in front of the open fire place on the left.
