Hand beaten gold fishes and silver mermaid. Designed by Maud Smit. Hand crafted by Eweg. After school you would find me in the Martinshof Atelier, watching Eweg making these incredible pieces. The shape of the mermaid was first sawed out off a plate of silver, then fixed on the flat surface of a bowl filled with solid lacquer. The shape was then sculptured by beating the three dimensional shape in the negative with a collection of various tiny hammers. Only a man with the enormous patience and skill like Eweg could ever hope to complete such a job. This mermaid took him at least a full week to hammer out. Because of the long hours to make a piece like this it would be astronomical in price now. Also the superb craftsmanship required would be very hard to find these days. Everything is stamped out now by machines.
