Mijas located on the mountain slope above the coastal town of Fuengarola, with the Mediterranean Sea in the distance. Mijas' church Plaza de Toros and open air Auditorium are located on a rocky knob in front of the village, a steep rocky cliff slope behind it. In around 1726 (?) Mijas was devastated by a large landslide, many villagers dying in the event. A fountain on a small square in the village, built from rubble from the landslide, commemorates this tragic event. There are still clear signs of soil creep visible along the road above the village, so another slide in the future can not be ruled out.
