Ant hills in Australia take on many different colours, shapes and sizes. The type shown here is common inland from Darwin and there are plenty of them surrounding our Mango farm here. This particular one is larger than the 2 story shed next to it, and at least 6 meters (20 ft) high. They occur on many of the private properties here, but people respect them and leave them alone and intact in their gardens.
There is also here in the NT a related type of ants that build similar structures in terms of height and colour, but flat in shape. Their longest horizontal axis orientated exactly NS. In the morning when the sun shines on the ant hill's Eastern flank the ants inside are located in the western side of their home. In the afternoon when the sun starts warming the ant hill's Western flank, the ants inside move to the now cooler Eastern side of their structure.
