Declarer has won 5 tricks and sees 4 more sure winners, enough to make his contract.
Three rounds of ♠ have been played and two ♠ are left in the game. If North has both, South can not have any. But if South does have one more ♠, North only has one.
It is therefore safe to take the finesse, even if it fails (as in this case).
