RC 4.1 - Rhythm Segments 1-4 with Rests

The number of basic 2-beat Rhythm Segments is increased considerably by replacing individual notes by their equivalent rest value.
Below Segments 1 to 4 with rests.
Rhythm Segments 1, 2a, 3a and 4a are identical in terms of rhythm (when clapping) but different in their individual note length (when playing).

Press on any Rhythm Segment to hear its Audio.

Clap or play a long with each of above demos to become thoroughly familiar with each one.

The above demos are in the same style as in Lesson 3
Each one plays the rhythm segment on beat 1 and 2 of each bar, while the metronome clicks like this :

  • First 2 bars = count in : 1   3   1 2 3 4

  • Next 4 bars = a click on each beat

  • Next 8 bars = a click on beats 1 and 3 of each bar

  • Next 8 bars = a click on beat 1 of each bar

  • Next 12 bars = a click on beat 1 once every 2 bars

  • Next 16 bars = a click on beat 1 once every 4 bars

Listen carefully, tap with your foot and try to clap or play the rhythm exactly at the right moment each time.

RC 4.2 - Correct Note Length

Take care to play each note always for its full length.
Wind instrument players especially often fall into the trap of playing notes too short.

The minim in Rhythm Segment 1 starts on the downbeat of 1 and ends on the downbeat of 3, not on the downbeat of 2 ! (or anywhere in between beats 2 and 3).

Likewise the crotchet in Segment 2a ends on the downbeat of 2, and the dotted crotchet in Segment 3a ends on the upbeat of 2.

RC 4.3 - Rhythm Segments 5-7 with Rests

Rhythm Segments 5 - 7 consist of 3 notes each.
As a consequence the number of variations, using equivalent rests for each note, increases substantially.
Rhythm Segments 4b, 6c and 7c are identical in terms of rhythm (when clapping) but different in their individual note length (when playing).

RC 4.4 - Rhythm Segment 8 with Rests

Rhythm Segment 8 consists of 4 notes, generating eight new variations with rests.
Some of them have identical rhythms to previously generated Rhythm Segments, but differ in note length.
(A few more possibilities which exactly duplicate variations of Rhythms Segments 1-7 have been omitted here.)

RC 4.5 - Rhythm Patterns 25 - 84

Clap and play the Preparatory Exercise 2 and 3 a few times, until confident, before embarking on Rhythm patterns 25 - 84.

Clap and play Rhythm Patterns 25 - 84 first at a comfortable tempo (about 60 bpm) until you can play them confidently without any mistakes.
Then :

  1. Increase the tempo to improve your reading and playing skills

  2. Slow down the tempo to improve your timing accuracy.

The downbeats 1 and 3 are shown below each bar. If you have trouble reading a particular pattern write the additional beat positions (numbers and plus signs) underneath it in pencil, but rub them out as soon as you can play the pattern with some confidence correctly.

Use the Circle of Fifths Bossa play-a-long tracks as explained in Lesson 3.
